Number 25 serves the ball over the net number 5 yells “GOT IT” and bumps it to 8 and number 8 sets it to number 18 and 18 spikes it into number 15’s face and before 15 could move she gets hit smack dab in the nose. Blackhawk middle school girls run in the middle to congratulate each other for the point. Coach Mr. Hubley pulls out number 15 and puts in number 25. 25 goes up to serve, she pounds that ball over the net like she were pounding a mallet. All of a sudden Jefferson’s players all dive to the ground to get the ball up, but it was too late, Bms took the win against Jefferson, 25-14.
Later that night number 15 Alexia Goodwin’s nose was bruised and swollen. It almost looked as if it were broken. Alexia cried to her mom saying “ mom it hurtsssssss” while her mother is gently feeling it. Amy * Alexia’s mom* thinks her daughter should go to the doctor and get it looked at. But for now it was time to go to sleep. Her mother put a Band-Aid over her nose and gave her some ice. Alexia and Amy went to bed that night.
When Alexia and Amy woke up the next morning Alexia’s nose were all different types of colors. The 2 girls went to the doctors around noon. When they arrive they wait patiently in the waiting room. The nurse takes them back to the room . The nurse asked what happened to my nose. I told her how Bms took the win vs. Towels and how I got hit. The nurse responds, “Now I know sports are fun but they can be dangerous. You can do a lot to hurt yourself. That’s why you should always stay safe.
The nurse goes to get the doctor. He comes in and says, “OWWWW!” He already knows what happened because of the nurse. The doctor told Alexia about all these injuries in volleyball. Alexia asked him, “what kind of injuries?” He was excited to tell Alexia about injuries.
Doctor King said, “Well, in volleyball you can roll your ankle. It mostly happens when you back pedal or after jumping. To prevent that from happening you should wear an ankle brace. You can get floor burns from sliding on the ground. They can burn and swell up. Volleyball players usually wear knee pads to make it easier to dive for the ball.”
The whole time Alexia was nodding and listening . “spraining a wrist is painful. Those hurt the worse. You can do that by catching yourself from falling, or hitting the ball wrong. Not all, but some players put tape on their wrist for that and just so the ball doesn’t hurt their wrists.”
Doctor King was done with those examples of injuries for volleyball. After Amy and Alexia left the doctor’s office the girls went to buy knee pads and tape. Now Alexia and her nose will be fine.
